The idealized Jewish immigrant experience to the Goldene Medineh (golden land) is realistically re-envisioned in Joan Micklin Silver's 1975 masterpiece, Hester Street. Challenges of assimilation and tradition are highlighted by the film's attention to historical detail, down to Yiddish dialogue with English subtitles.
