Eight hundred years ago, Sephardic Jews dominated Jewish life. Their sages (e.g., Maimonides) were pre-eminent; their battles between philosophy and mysticism defined medieval Judaism; their creative interaction with Muslim and Christian cultures expanded Jewish culture; and their material and political rise and fall – from Golden Age to Inquisition and Expulsion – was an epic drama.
