The earliest secular and Humanistic Jews felt deeply part of an ethnic nation – distinct languages, foods, holidays, and social and employment networks all tied them to each other in a “thick” ethnic experience. As we have integrated into Western culture, welcoming people of other backgrounds to join the Jewish family by marriage or by themselves becoming Jewish, what does our Jewishness mean in the 21st Century?
