Cultural Activities

There are no cliques at Kol Hadash. We warmly welcome everyone  to participate in
all of our social and cultural activities. Creating and experiencing culture is part of what
makes us human, and we love to do so together.
 
 

Movie/Book Group

The Movie/Book Group watches movies and/or reads books, and then meets virtually to discuss. Past movie selections have included Blazing Saddles, Notorious, and Burn After Reading. Past book selections have included All the President’s Men, The Vanishing Half, and The Splendid and the Vile. Non-Fiction Book Group

The Non-Fiction Book Group typically meets every six weeks for member-led discussions. Past selections have included: The Good Life:  Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness by Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz; Starry Messenger by Neil deGrasse Tyson; and The Power Law: Venture Capital and the Making of the New Future by Sebastian Mallaby. Science Fiction Group

The Science Fiction Group typically meets bi-monthly for member-led discussions on science fiction books or movies. Past selections have included The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, The Man from Earth (movie), Red Shirts, The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, Ancillary Justice, and Dark Matter. Theatre Group

The Theatre Group watches two or three performances per year (in person or virtually). Past live productions have included Fiddler on the Roof at the Civic Opera House, Follies at Chicago Shakespeare Theater,  War Paint at Goodman Theatre, The Curious Case of the Watson Intelligence at Theater Wit, and Whipping Man at Northlight Theater. Past virtual performances with discussions following have included Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, What the Constitution Means to Me, and Rent.
