Shabbat

Our Humanistic, culturally Jewish Shabbat services celebrate our Jewish connections
through thought-provoking and inspirational poetry, prose and music that touch
our hearts and stimulate our minds.

8 Ways Kol Hadash Does Shabbat Differently

1. Our Friday evening secular Shabbat services replace worship with a belief in human knowledge, power and responsibility.

2. We provide a comfortable home for individuals and families who identify as Culturally Jewish, Just Jewish, Jew-ish, Jewish and . . . , Half-Jewish, Jews by Choice, Multicultural, Not Religious, Secular, Humanistic, Atheist, and/or Agnostic. No prior knowledge or Jewish literacy is needed; come as you are!

3. Services are largely in English so everyone can participate. Any Hebrew is also written in English characters with English translations.

4. Our variety of Shabbat services incorporate Jewish texts, both ancient and modern, original meditations, poetry, and music. While there are common elements in every service, each service offers different ideas, melodies and experiences.

5. Services are about an hour long, followed by a casual oneg/reception with food, drink and lots of socializing.

6. Our blessings for candles, wine, and challah connect us to Jewish tradition, while recognizing the natural world and human involvement in their creation.

7. Our discussions and sermons explore the entire range of human and Jewish history, culture and philosophy. When Rabbi Chalom does choose a Torah reading for discussion, he selects a relevant portion rather than being limited to the Torah portion of the week.

8. We view Shabbat as a gift to ourselves: a human invention that improves time by adding silence to noise, stillness to motion.

Sunday School

Family Shabbat Celebrations

A highlight of the Sunday School year are the Class Shabbat Services. Our classes create and lead a Friday evening Shabbat Service that reflects what they are studying.

We also have occasional Family Home Shabbat celebrations in members’ homes. These are opportunities to share food, fellowship and friendship in a casual setting.

You might enjoy a Humanistic Shabbat service at home with our Family home Shabbat service
