Elul, the Jewish month that begins shortly after this Shabbat, has no set holidays or fast days. Rabbinic Judaism prescribed rituals of repentance: sounding the shofar [ram’s horn], reciting prayers apologizing and begging forgiveness, reflecting on failure and repairing relationships in preparation for cosmic judgment at the New Year.
