The traditional Torah Portions for this Shabbat, Behar and Bechukotai (Leviticus 25:1-27:34), offer the promise of a year of rest, a return to ancestral lands and the freeing of slaves in the 50th year (after 7 cycles of 7 years). But they also promise seven-fold punishment if divine laws are ignored. Was this prophecy, or the meaning drawn after the destruction of ancient Judea?
