The most successful secular movement in Jewish history was Zionism. It created a Jewish state, revived Hebrew as a modern secular language, and created a culture that celebrated human-centered values such as human effort and self-defense. For all of the challenges of the modern state of Israel, Zionism’s assertion that to be Jewish is to be part of the Jewish people is ours as well.
