These days, nationalism is almost a dirty word: ethnocentric, chauvinist, parochial, and the source of global conflict. But nationalism can also be “patriotism,” a feeling that motivates us to pay taxes, provide services, defend civil rights and safeguard fellow citizens with whom we have no common family, ethnic or religious ties.
